Hey guys!!! In this first part of two blogs, were going to be going over everything mise-en-scene. So what exactly is mise-en-scene? In French, the term literally refers to “placing on stage”. It most popularly refers to all the elements that appear on camera and their arrangement. Follow along as i go over the different components that make up the mise-en-scene terms
The first element of mise-en-scene we can take a look at is location. With location, where your scene takes place is important to control as it can help set a mood or tone for the actions that can or will take place by the characters. No dialogue needs to even be present and just the feel of where the location is can help the audience have an understanding as to the direction it’s going to go.

For exanple, with the picture above, do you picture a joyous moment between two characters occur a moment where a child perhaps receives the best news of their life? No, you picture a stressful, intense moment about to happen as the sky turns grey and the clouds become heavy.

Another element that we will be taking a look at this blog is a costume. Costumes are simply the clothes that an actor puts on for a play, show, film, etc. However, in order for costumes to be effective, a designer who specializes on the tailoring and fit of the costume for the actors, has to make sure they keep things in check for the actor. Making sure the fit is correct, using colors that match what they’re going for, making sure what proportions would look good on the character, etc. Above is an example of my girlfriend when she was very young wearing a Pocanhontas costume. She had a lead role in her school play, so the costume had to be on point.

We cansee how there many different things that come into play besides the basic things our eyes can see on screen or on a piece of paper. And this is not even the half of it! Stay tuned for the next part where we go into the second part of mise-en-scene elements. See you guys in the next one!
